2012 Aerial Imaging Project Partner (Midwest USA)

Dear Group I am currently looking for any parties located in the Midwest who would be interested in working together on a small UAV imaging project. I have a functional UAV which I need to test on real world applications. Due to FAA regulations the use of UAVs for commercial purposes is not permitted so any work would be undertaken as a research project with no monies changing hands. My interest is to test my system and to develop relationships that can become commercial if and when the FAA…See More

UAV use in Ag Part #4

Flying a small UAV

Flying a small UAV is really boring! After hours of flight planning and a pre-flight check list as long as your arm this is exactly what you want. The objective is for the flight to be as mundane as possible. Takeoff and landing are the two periods of intensity but if the system is functioning correctly and the weather is good all you will need to do is monitor the ground control station and keep an eye on the… Continue

The UAV

This blog is not intended as an advertisement for MicroPilot and and CropCam and I will go into the details of the systems limitations later in this blog. However a description of how the system works may be useful as most small UAV systems share common features. The CropCam contains a military grade autopilot unit (the MP2028) in an off the…

UAV use in Ag Part #2

The Skills Challenge

UAVs are not for everyone! Operating a small UAV requires a number of diverse skills, which include understanding the basics of radio controlled flight, the ability to learn the features and limitations of the autopilot and additionally the ability to work with mapping applications for pre flight planning and GIS processes post flight. Unfortunately these are issues that the people selling you a UAV…

UAV use in Ag Part #1

For the past few years I have been working on the use of small UAVs in agriculture. I will try to give the group an overview of my activities through a number of blog posts that will deal with various aspects of the use of small unmanned aerial vehicles.

This all started in 2004 when I heard about a camera system flown on a radio controlled helicopter being used to monitor commercial…
