We recently conducted a survey of ag retailers on their use of mobile technology (smartphones and tablets). One of the questions we asked retailers is what type of ag-related apps they use for business purposes. Not surprisingly, weather was the clear-cut No. 1 choice of app, with 80% of respondents indicating they use a weather-related app.
Fourth on the list (after agronomic and commodity pricing) of ag-related apps used was precision agriculture. Nearly 20% of ag retailers said they use a precision ag app for their profession. While this percentage isn't overwhelming by any stretch, my instincts suggest this number is trending upward — and will continue to do so in the next few years.
Ag-related apps are peaking the interest of the entire agriculture community, not just retailers. Evidence of this fact can be found in an article I wrote last year titled, "20 Best Mobile Apps For Agriculture." This feature was THE most-viewed page on CropLife.com in 2011, and I continue to receive feedback from readers who want to add to the list.
With that said, I'd like to compile a new list of mobile ag apps in 2012. That's where I need your help. If you are currently using a precision ag app that allows you to do your job more efficiently, please let me know about it. You can e-mail the name of the app and a brief description to matt@croplife.com.
I look forward to hearing from you.
